Apple working on bigger changes for the 2024 generation

While the Apple Watch Series 8 didn’t bring too many big changes in terms of design and features to the existing Apple Watch customer base, Apple Watch Ultra introduced lots of new goodies.

With a larger screen, a more rugged display, and plenty of new and exclusive features, Apple Watch Ultra, therefore, became Apple’s latest and greatest smartwatch.

And needless to say, many expected the Cupertino-based tech giant to continue this approach of keeping the Apple Watch Ultra a pioneer on all fronts in 2023 as well.

Unfortunately, this doesn’t seem very likely right now. Analyst Jeff Pu says in an investor note that the Apple Watch series is unlikely to get any massive upgrade this year, most likely as Apple will focus on modest improvements under the hood.

In other words, we should expect a similar design, both on the standard Apple Watch and on the Ultra, as well as only subtle hardware upgrades, including a new chip.

Much more exciting news for the Apple Watch customer base, however, is due in 2024. As it turns out, Apple is already working on several massive changes, including a switch from OLED to micro LED. Apple is already using micro LED on a series of products, and in 2024, it’s also expected to adopt the same technology for the iPad.

But at the same time, Apple Watch Ultra will also be refreshed in 2024, with Pu saying that the device should sport a larger display that would measure 2.1 inches, up from 1.93 inches on the current model. Most likely, the smartwatch overall will maintain its size, so the bigger screen estate will be possible thanks to a larger screen.

As a result, 2023 is likely to bring a drop in terms of Apple Watch sales, Pu says, with a major boost to be recorded in 2024 when the new models finally go live.
