Nikon Corporation announced today the Nikon Z 7 and Nikon Z 6, it's first mirrorless digital cameras using the Nikon FX full-frame format and an all-new Nikon Z mount system compatible with next-generation NIKKOR Z lenses.

It took Nikon a few years to get into the mirrorless market, which is pretty much owned by Sony right now with its fantastic 35mm full-frame mirrorless cameras like the latest Sony α7 III, but the Japanese company promises to gain ground in the full-frame mirrorless camera market and pursue new dimension in optical performance with the Nikon Z 7 and Nikon Z 6 models.

The Nikon Z 7 and Nikon Z 6 full-frame mirrorless camera inherit the build quality, intuitive operability, high reliability, and excellent imaging technology from Nikon's traditional DSLR cameras. But the key to a successful mirrorless camera is the brand-new Z mount system, says Nikon, by offering a larger-diameter mount that will unlock further possibilities of lens design.

"The letter “Z” represents the culmination of Nikon’s relentless pursuit of ultimate optical performance, and a bridge to a new chapter. It is about redefining possibilities to provide image makers with tools to pursue greater creativity," said Nikon. "Nikon will expand the value of mirrorless cameras through the pursuit of a new dimension in optical performance."

Technical specifications of Nikon Z 7 and Nikon Z 6

Equipped with a new backside illumination full-frame CMOS sensor that features focal-plane phase-detection AF pixels and doesn't have an Optical Low Pass Filter, both the Nikon Z 7 and Nikon Z 6 full-frame mirrorless cameras include a fast and accurate hybrid AF system with 493 focus points on the Z 7 model and 273 focus points on the Z 6 model that cover approximately 90% of the imaging area.

While the Nikon Z 6 comes with a modest 24.5 MP sensor supporting standard ISO 100–51200 sensitivities that can be expanded to ISO 50 and up to ISO 204800, the Nikon Z7 features a larger 45.7 MP sensor, the largest in the market, supporting standard ISO 64–25600 sensitivities expandable to ISO 32 and the equivalent of ISO 102400. Both cameras are using latest EXPEED 6 image-processing engine.

With an ergonomic, magnesium alloy design that's unique to the Nikon cameras, the Nikon Z 7 and Nikon Z 6 ensures familiar operation for those switching from current DSLR models, and both cameras are equipped with a 3690k-dot OLED electronic viewfinder that offers 100% frame coverage and 0.8x magnification, as well as approximately 37.0 degrees diagonal viewing angle. On the back, both models have a bright and generous 3.2-inch, 2100k-dot touch-sensitive LCD monitor with tilting capabilities

For videographers, the Nikon Z 7 and Nikon Z 6 mirrorless camera come with 4K UHD (3840x2160) at 30fps movie recording capabilities using the Nikon FX-based video format, as well as Full-HD 1080p video recording at 120fps. Both movie recording modes offer electronic vibration reduction, focus peaking, 10-bit N-Log, and Active D-Lighting functions for sharper, professional movies.

Last but not least, the Nikon Z 7 and Nikon Z 6 cameras are equipped with a 5-axes in-camera vibration reduction (VR) system to provide compensation for movement, which is the equivalent to a shutter speed up to 5.0 stops. They also feature high-speed continuous shooting of 9 fps on the Nikon Z 7 model and 12 fps on the Nikon Z 6 model, which are perfect for sports and fast motion shooting.

Nikon also announced today a new mount adapter for its brand-new Nikon Z 7 and Nikon Z 6 mirrorless cameras that will enable customers to use their old NIKKOR F mount lenses without compromise. As expected, both models come with the latest technologies like built-in Wi-Fi, stereo mic, Bluetooth support, and are environmentally sealed.

Unfortunately, there's only slot card available on the Nikon Z 7 and Nikon Z 6 mirrorless cameras, which might be an issue for numerous professional photographers and videographers out there. Nikon's mirrorless camera are expected to hit the shelves next month on September 27 and will cost somewhere around US $3399 for the Nikon Z 7 (body only) and about US $1995 for the Nikon Z 6 (body only).
