Nicki Minaj is addressing her loyal fans to let them know that they should get off Taylor Swift’s back, because whatever dispute they’d gotten into because of the nominations for the MTV MVAs 2015, it’s over now. They’ve kissed and made up, and might even be planning on working together again after this.
Nicki was on ABC’s Good Morning America to perform and because she’d been in the media so much for her Taylor Swift “feud,” she took a few moments to address it. You can see a video of that segment of the interview below.
Diversity in body representations in the media is essential
In short, the “feud” started when Nicki was upset that her “Anaconda” video wasn’t nominated at the gala for Video of the Year. She argued that if she’d been skinny and white, her video would have gotten the recognition is deserved.
She didn’t call out Taylor Swift by name, but she was the only white and thin woman nominated, so she could have only been talking about her. Either way, Taylor responded saying Nicki should know better than to bring another woman down, especially since she (Taylor) had been nothing but supportive of her (Nicki).
In the end, as the backlash turned into a real threat for Taylor’s so-far-spotless image, she apologized. Nicki maintained that she was never talking about her and that she was only trying to underline the bias and the racism in the music industry and the media.
She sticks by her words now: women need more diversity in body representation, and that means including women who aren’t only white or only thin.
“I think we just have to have both images for girls,” she says. “ We can’t have only one type of body being glorified in the media because it just makes girls even more insecure than we already are.”
A possible future collaboration
Nicki insists that she’s not upset with Taylor anymore: we all make mistakes and rush to speak out on an issue we’re ignorant of / not properly educated on, don’t we?
She says they spoke on the phone for a very long time and settled the dispute, and she ended up admiring Taylor even more for having the guts to publicly admit she was wrong and to apologize for it. In today’s showbiz landscape, that really doesn’t happen too often.
Something even better may come out of the Twitter spat (a big chunk of which is included below, under the GMA video), Nicki teases: she and Taylor could even hit the recording studio together again.
I thought I was being called out. I missed the point, I misunderstood, then misspoke. I'm sorry, Nicki. @NICKIMINAJ

I've always loved her. Everyone makes mistakes. She gained so much more respect from me. Let's move on. https://t.co/mx9pfIdnzT

Finding it ironic to parade the pit women against other women argument about as one unmeasurably capitalizes on the take down of a woman...

Hey guys @MTV thank you for my nominations. 😘😘😘 Did Feeling Myself miss the deadline or...?
— NICKI MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ) July 21, 2015
If I was a different "kind" of artist, Anaconda would be nominated for best choreo and vid of the year as well. 😊😊😊
— NICKI MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ) July 21, 2015
U couldn't go on social media w/o seeing ppl doing the cover art, choreo, outfits for Halloween...an impact like that & no VOTY nomination?
— NICKI MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ) July 21, 2015
When the "other" girls drop a video that breaks records and impacts culture they get that nomination. 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊

Ironically, I'm shooting a VIDEO today😩
— NICKI MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ) July 21, 2015
If your video celebrates women with very slim bodies, you will be nominated for vid of the year 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
— NICKI MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ) July 21, 2015
Oh but trust me. I'll be on that stage to collect my awards for vid of the year. Feeling Myself & Anaconda. 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊

I'm not always confident. Just tired. Black women influence pop culture so much but are rarely rewarded for it. https://t.co/2xOvJzBXJX

Huh? U must not be reading my tweets. Didn't say a word about u. I love u just as much. But u should speak on this. @taylorswift13
— NICKI MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ) July 21, 2015
Nothing I said had to do with Taylor. So what jabs? White media and their tactics. So sad. That's what they want. https://t.co/AfcwoyDvpg
— NICKI MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ) July 21, 2015
Ryan posted a headline of Taylor saying she loves & supports me. But not me saying the same to her. Lol. Their headline says I took a "jab"?

I'm so glad u guys get to see how this stuff works. Taylor took her music off spotify and was applauded. We launched Tidal & were dragged.
— NICKI MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ) July 21, 2015
@NICKIMINAJ I've done nothing but love & support you. It's unlike you to pit women against each other. Maybe one of the men took your slot..
— Taylor Swift (@taylorswift13) July 21, 2015
@NICKIMINAJ If I win, please come up with me!! You're invited to any stage I'm ever on.
