Completely turning off noise cancelation fixes the problem

Google's latest flagship smartphones, the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P, have been available on the market for quite some time now. Unfortunately, many owners complain of microphone issues that don't allow them to use the speakerphone when talking on the Nexus 6P.

The search giant has already acknowledged the issue but doesn't have a fix for the moment. It's unclear where this is coming from, or whether or not it is related to a hardware or software problem that Nexus 6P is facing.

Google Nexus forums are full of threads that describe the issues, but also some solutions for those who need to use the speakerphone.

What's worse is that many Nexus 6P owners also have this problem with spotty voice quality when using the smartphone in standard call mode, not on speakerphone.

“Hello there. I spend a good amount of time on phone making international calls on 3rd party apps such as Viber. Unfortunately, people on the other side of the phone can't hear me when speakerphone is on no matter how close I am to the phone.”

“The other person on the phone says that when I'm on speakerphone, my voice comes from very far away (even though I'm holding the phone to my mouth!) or it is very noisy (they hear ‘ambient noise’ which doesn't exist on my side),” explains one Nexus 6P owner.

Muffled voice, poor call quality

As soon as these problems appeared, the Android community got to work to try and find what's causing these issues and what can be done to fix them until Google releases a software update.

After thorough experimentation, it turns out that Nexus 6P owners can fix these issues by rooting their phones and disabling the noise canceling feature.

“I turned off noise cancelling via build prop and it fixed it for me. This goes back to the nexus 5 and nexus 6 as well. I doubt its a hardware issue. Google really needs to enable a setting for this or use better software,” confirms another Nexus 6P owner.

If you're not willing to root your Nexus 6P smartphone, then you will have to wait for Google to release an official fix for these microphone issues.
