The phones will not connect to in-car Bluetooth systems

Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P are among the first smartphones to have received the Android 7.1.1 Nougat update, along with a couple of other Nexus and Pixel devices.

While the new features and improvements included in the update are more than welcome, it appears that Android 7.1.1 Nougat broke some things for these devices.

Soon after the update was released and made its way to eligible devices, Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P have started to complain about in-car Bluetooth issues. It appears that after the update, these smartphones would not connect to the in-car Bluetooth system any longer.

Unfortunately, the issues have been present since the first developer preview, but Google hasn't fixed them before the final version of Android 7.1.1 Nougat was rolled out to the masses.

The issues date back from October, but haven't been fixed yet

It's also worth mentioning that many Nexus users have listed the issues in the Google bug tracker since October, and the official forums have many threads regarding the in-car Bluetooth problems after the Android 7.1.1 update.

I've got this problem. Since the update to Android 7.1.1 my Nexus will not stay connected to my 2012 Chevy Cruze. Only happened after the update. Also I've tried all the steps listed. Not impressed thus problem existed in October and still has not been resolved and now it's official release. Alphabet get your stuff together. Highly unprofessional.”

Same issue. Nexus 6p. After the ota update to 7.1.1 it connects to my Renault Clio and the disconnects after a couple of seconds. Didn't have any problems before the update.Going to try to install the official 7.0 ROM tonight.”

These are just a couple of messages received by Google on the Product Forums, but there are hundreds complaining about this specific issue with the in-car Bluetooth connection.

Sadly, this isn't the only problem that Nexus devices have been afflicted with after the Android 7.1.1 Nougat update, though some of them have been addressed in the latest patches.

Hopefully, the upcoming February security update will contain a fix for the in-car Bluetooth issues, before it becomes ridiculous.
