The upcoming game will not be a sequel to Witcher 3

CD Projekt RED made all its money from The Witcher franchise, so it would be foolish to get rid of the golden goose even if a sequel doesn't make sense story-wise. The Polish company is now the second biggest European developer after Ubisoft, a title entirely owed to The Witcher series.

Even though CD Projekt RED said in the past that the story of Geralt of Rivia is over, that doesn't really mean that other stories in the same universe can't be told. However, the Polish developer is quite busy with their next big game – Cyberpunk 2077, which is set to launch on September 17, after it was initially scheduled for release on April 16.

However, as soon as Cyberpunk 2077 is released this fall, CD Projekt RED will start working on a new Witcher game, the company's president Adam Kicinski confirmed recently. He told a group of journalists (Eurogamer Poland, PSU) that the studio already has a “relatively clear concept” of what they'd like to do with the series and that full production will kick off immediately after Cyberpunk 2077 is launched.

One other important thing he told journalists is that the next Witcher game will not be a sequel, and that's exactly what the studio said in the past. Although this doesn't rule out the possibility of a prequel, we doubt there's anything else to say about Geralt of Rivia that hasn't been said in the three full games and two major expansions.

Also, Kicinski confirmed CD Projekt RED's next games will be set in either the Witcher or Cyberpunk universe. According to him, a smaller team from the studio is now handling the new Witcher game, while two bigger teams will continue development on Cyberpunk 2077. Once the latter hits the shelves and the new Witcher game enters full production, more people will be added to the project.
