FLAC support broken down in the latest OS feature update

Windows 10 version 1809 (October 2018 Update) is available for download for all devices from Windows Update, but this doesn’t necessarily mean that all issues have already been resolved.

In fact, users have recently discovered another bug in Windows 10 version 1809, and by the looks of things, Microsoft itself knows it exists, only that it hasn’t officially acknowledged it.

Users complain in this Microsoft Community thread that the update to Windows 10 version 1809 broke down FLAC support, with one poster explaining the following:

“I have recently updated my computer to the October Update. However, I have noticed that after ripping some of my discs to FLAC, some of the metadata gets cut off (e.g. "American Beauty/American Psycho" gets cut off as "American Beauty/American P" instead). This did not happen while I had the April 2018 update, and editing the metadata does not work as it only cuts the metadata again.”

Fix already developed

Microsoft hasn’t confirmed the bug, but the company did say in the release notes of the most recent preview build of Windows 10 19H1 that it resolved a problem affecting FLAC support in the operating system.

“We fixed an issue resulting in FLAC metadata being cut short in File Explorer and other locations,” Microsoft explains.

In other words, a fix has already been developed and it is currently available for Windows Insiders running Windows 10 19H1 preview builds. This means that Microsoft should publish the same fix for Windows 10 version 1809 devices very soon as well, though for now, no specifics are available on the ETA.

The next cumulative updates for Windows 10 are projected to go live on January 8 as part of this month’s Patch Tuesday cycle, and naturally, version 1809 will be one of those getting patches. It remains to be seen if a fix for the FLAC issue would be included or not.
