Microsoft has released Windows 10 build 18990 to Windows insiders in the Fast ring, bringing automatic restart support for UWP apps.

Beginning with build 18965, Windows 10 users are provided with a dedicated option in the Settings app to automatically restart Win32 apps when rebooting the device or entering the sleep mode.

This new release enables similar functionality for UWP apps, technically making it possible to restore your current session automatically when signing in to Windows after a system reboot.

“in addition to registered desktop apps, when you opt into this setting, the majority of open UWP apps are now also automatically restarted as well! To reduce sign-in time, UWP apps are restarted minimized, in a suspended state, giving Windows and other apps more resources to get started,” Dona Sarkar, chief of the Windows Insider program, explains.

WSL improvements

Additionally, the same build also includes further improvements for the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL), such as the refined performance for directory listings in \wsl$.

There are lots of general changes and improvements, and while you can check them out in full in the box after the jump, worth highlighting is the fine-tuning for Action Center and File Explorer, with the latter featuring a “little bigger” default width for the search box.

There’s one known issue that concerns optional drivers in this build, with Microsoft explaining the following:

“When viewing Optional drivers in the new section on the Windows Update page, you may notice older drivers showing as available for download. If accepted, they will attempt to install and fail to do so. This is a bug related to revised Windows Update detection logic rather than this new UI. The root cause is understood, and a fix will be available in an upcoming build.”

Windows 10 20H1 is projected to be finalized in early 2020 and then released to users in April or May the same year.
