14 DAY TRIAL // Microsoft has become quite a big supporter of the open-source world, and in addition to buying GitHub, the company also continues its Linux push with more listings published in the Microsoft Store for Windows 10 users.
As you might already be aware, there are several Linux distributions available for download in the Microsoft Store, and as one of the largest companies to join this effort, Canonical is offering multiple flavors of Ubuntu.
In addition to Ubuntu 18.04 and Ubuntu 16.04, a third listing simply called Ubuntu is now live in the Store, making it easier for users to download the latest version of the operating system.
Getting the latest Ubuntu version
While at first glance it might be harder to figure out what’s the purpose of this new listing, the description published in the Microsoft Store set things straight:
“This app installs the latest stable Ubuntu LTS release on Windows, LTS release with the first point release. If you would like to use a specific LTS release, for example 18.04, please install the release-specific app, Ubuntu 18.04 on Windows in that case. Please note that the app updates the Ubuntu installation. Please upgrade to a new release.”
Basically, with this listing, users can be sure they are running the most recent version of Ubuntu, most likely as Canonical wants to make several of its latest releases available in the Store at the same time. This means it’ll be possible to download and install both older and newer versions of Ubuntu, and this new item lets you always stay up-to-date easily.
Most likely, other Linux distributions will land in the Store in the coming months as well, not only because Microsoft continues investing in the open-source push, but also because running Linux on top of Windows 10 appears to become a feature that more and more developers seem to consider useful.
