14 DAY TRIAL // Statistics provided by Net Applications for the month of December 2015 show that Windows 10 had a hard time getting close to its predecessors and finally reached the fourth place in the charts.
But a different set of figures, this time coming from StatCounter, point to better performance for Microsoft’s new operating system.
Specifically, StatCounter claims that Windows 10 grew at a much faster pace in December to reach the third place in the charts, which means that worldwide it’s the third most-used desktop operating system.
Unsurprisingly, Windows 7 continues to be the number one desktop platform, but as compared to Net Applications figures, it’s already below the 50 percent milestone in this case. Only 47.46 percent of the desktop PCs worldwide were said to be running Windows 7 in December.
Windows 10 versus rivals
On the other hand, Windows 8.1 was at 12.15 percent last month, while Windows 10 managed to improve so much that it got closer than 1 percent. Microsoft’s new OS reached 11.84 percent and surpassed OS X, which according to the same figures had a share of 9.84 percent.
Microsoft clearly expects Windows 10 to perform better in the next 12 months, especially because it wants it to be installed on 1 billion devices by 2017, so it’ll be interesting to see how adoption of the new OS goes in the coming months.
Word has it that Windows 10 is already running on 200 million devices worldwide and with the release of Windows 10 Mobile and enterprises joining the upgrade bandwagon, adoption figures are very likely to go up. But getting closer to Windows 7 will definitely be a challenge, especially because many of those still running this OS version do not seem to be at all interested in moving to Windows 10. At least, not right now.
