The jack adapter will continue to be sold separately

Apple is getting ready to make another major step towards its transition from the traditional headphone jack to a truly wireless future.

This year’s iPhone generation may come without the Lightning to headphone jack adapter included in the box, with Apple instead trying to push customers to buying its AirPods. Obviously, the AirPods won’t be included in the box, so technically, this year’s iPhones make come without any earphones.

Cirrus Logic, the company that has previously manufactured the adapter shipped with older iPhone models, confirmed new Apple smartphones would ship without such an accessory, according to a Barclays note.

“Reported a beat but gave mixed guidance with revenue below but earnings ahead. Cirrus didn't update its FY19 guide… but they did finally confirm the dongle loss, adding more support for our below estimates,” a research note is quoted as saying.

The headphone jack saga

While the Lightning to headphone jack adapter would no longer come with new iPhones, it will continue to be sold separately at the Apple Store. The adapter costs $9 and it is one of the cheapest accessories that Apple offers right now, though it’s believed that the company actually sells millions of them.

Apple removed the headphone jack on the iPhone 7, producing a huge controversy in the mobile world. To ease the transition from the audio port to wireless headphones, Apple included a Lightning to headphone jack adapter in the box of the iPhone. The same strategy was used for the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X, but if this report proves to be accurate, Apple is ready to make the next big step towards leaving this super-popular port behind.

The new iPhone models will launch in September, with shipments to begin later the same month. Most likely, the adapter will continue to be one of the best-selling iPhone accessories if Apple indeed stops offering it with a new iPhone.
