The new plan will launch in November in 12 countries

Netflix has finally announced the new plan that everybody knew was coming: the ad-supported Basic With Ads is the cheapest subscription on the service, as it will cost $6.99 a month in the United States.

The new subscription will be available in just 12 countries, though there’s a chance Netflix is already making plans to expand its availability. And very important to know is that the existing subscriptions would live on, so you can still get Basic, Standard, and Premium at the same prices.

The ads, which will be 15 or 30 seconds in length, will play before and during the content you watch on Netflix. The company, however, doesn’t say how many ads it’ll show, though each hour, you should see between 4 and 5 minutes of ads.

“To help advertisers reach the right audience — and ensure our ads are more relevant for consumers — we’ll offer broad targeting capabilities by country and genre (e.g. action, drama, romance, sci-fi). Advertisers will also be able to prevent their ads from appearing on content that might be inconsistent with their brand (e.g. sex, nudity or graphic violence),” Netflix says.

The new Basic With Ads plan will go live in November, Netflix says.

Here’s what’s different and the same when comparing Basic with Ads and the Basic plans:

  • What stays the same: A wide variety of great TV shows and movies; personalized viewing experience; available on a wide range of TV and mobile devices; change or cancel your plan at any time.
  • What’s different: Video quality up to 720p/HD (now for both our Basic with Ads and Basic plans); an average of 4 to 5 minutes of ads per hour; a limited number of movies and TV shows won't be available due to licensing restrictions, which we’re working on; no ability to download titles.
