Luck played a big role in the pre-launch process

It seems that the development team at Naughty Dog was not too confident in the potential of The Last of Us when it first launched the post-apocalyptic title and believed that it had the potential to actually ruin the reputation of the company.

The revelation comes from a new episode of Conversations with Creators, which features appearances from leading members of the studio, talking about their titles, the design philosophy powering them, and the future of their company.

Neil Druckmann, one of the directors of The Last of Us, says that the Naughty Dog team actually joked about the downfall that would happen after launch and the fact that the Metacritic average would not go over 85.

Anthony Newman, who worked on the mechanics, states "It wasn’t coming together. So it was really a set of really lucky breaks in terms of gameplay decisions we made that really made everything fall into place and turned it into a fun game."

The Last of Us became one of the most celebrated titles on the PlayStation 3, and the company delivered a Remastered version for the new Sony home console that also sold well, with extra content and improved graphics.

Naughty Dog is now working on Uncharted 4

At the moment, the studio is dedicating all its resources to the development of the final title that will feature Nathan Drake as the main character.

Uncharted 4: A Thief's End is set to show a retired main character who springs back into action when his long-lost brother Sam appears, working hard to make sure that all those who love him stay safe in the long term.

Naughty Dog says that the game will be more open than any other in the series and will give players more options during both combat and exploration.

At E3 2015, a very solid battle and driving sequence was shown, which uses the power of the new generation of consoles to offer both better graphics and better gameplay.

The team is also promising more emotional elements and has been suggesting that another The Last of Us might be a possibility once the big Nathan Drake project is done.

Uncharted 4 will only be offered on the PlayStation 4 in the first few months of next year.
