It looks like Android could soon be supported

The developers of the open-source and cross-platform MPV video player software have announced the release of version 0.19.0, a new maintenance update that adds a few new features, options, and commands, and fixes lots of bugs.

MPV 0.19.0 is here five weeks after the release of MPV 0.18.1 to improve the build system with and new "--htmldir" option, implement atomics support as a mandatory requirement, as well as to modify the wscript to add proper unversioned SONAME for the Android mobile platform.

New features include a stream_cb API (Applications Programming Interface) that can be used for user-defined stream implementations, a video processor selection to the vf_d3d11vpp component, and a "--hwdec=videotoolbox-copy" option to the videotoolbox command, enabling hardware accelerated decoding with video filters.

Moreover, a tscale=linear direct implementation has been added in the vo_opengl component. It also looks like the delay audio filter has been removed, and new commands are present, such as "--audio-stream-silence," "--audio-wait-open," and "--no-autoload-files" to the player, vp9 support to "--hwdec-codecs" and yuv420p support to "--videotoolbox-format."

MPV works much better on the Wayland display server

We talked a while ago about Wayland becoming the default display server on numerous GNU/Linux distributions, replacing the old X.Org Server, and it appears that the "revolution" has started, and it may proceed quite quickly as many open-source projects are adding improvements to the modern, next-generation display server.

MPV is one of those projects, and the 0.19.0 release brings better Wayland support by fixing issues like the full-screen image switching bug, various crashes that occurred when switching to full-screen more before the video output is fully initialized, as well as to clip the window size to the display's output size.

There are many other Wayland improvements, and some of the most annoying issues reported by users since the MPV 0.18.0 or 0.18.1 releases have been addressed. You can download MPV 0.19.0 for GNU/Linux, Mac OS X, and Microsoft Windows operating systems right now via our website.
