PowerPoint content isn’t saved if Firefox 66 is used

Mozilla rolled out Firefox 66 earlier this week, but according to a new report, the company suspended the update for some users due to what appears to be a compatibility issue with the online version of Microsoft PowerPoint.

A report from TechDows indicates that Mozilla discovered the bug shortly after the release of Firefox 66, so the company decided to put the rollout on hold for some devices because of this.

A discussion on Bugzilla reveals that when Firefox 66 is used to connect to Microsoft PowerPoint Online, the content isn’t saved and any edits that users do in their presentations are lost.

A fix is already prepared for the Nightly build of Firefox for testing purposes, while the stable version of the browser should get it sometime next week.

“What I'd like us to do if we can do it quickly, is ship this fix via Normandy with just the powerpoint domain (since we have no evidence of other sites breaking). If we can do that tomorrow, then we will be clear to unthrottle the 66 release and ship it to 100% of the release channel population,” a Mozilla engineer said.

Other issues in Microsoft Word

By the looks of things, there are also two issues hitting Microsoft Word Online and which appear to be related to this problem.

Dennis Schubert of Mozilla says that pressing CMD + A selects the text but moves the focus out of the document, while double-clicking on text and writing something else doesn’t replace the selected characters and only adds what you type at the end.

“Both are minor, and […] shouldn't block the release,” he explained.

Users who haven’t updated their browser to Firefox 66 can run Microsoft PowerPoint Online just fine as none of the bugs mentioned above are reportedly hitting this release.
