14 DAY TRIAL // Mozilla is working on adding improved functionality to Firefox Monitor, a feature that the company rolled out in 2018 in order to let users determine if their accounts were exposed following a breach.
Using the popular service Have I Been Pwned, Mozilla appears to be ready to push things a little bit further for Firefox users, and wants to provide them with a warning whenever they load a website that has previously been breached.
As a result, the company has started testing out a new feature of Firefox Monitor in the nightly build of the browser that issues warnings when users go to a website that suffered a breach.
Users still need to head over to the Firefox Monitor database to check their credentials and determine if their accounts were exposed to hackers, but the notification displayed in the browser is the first step towards making people aware of the increased risk.
Already available in Firefox Nightly
The warning provides users with two different options, namely to check Firefox Monitor and dismiss the notification. If the latter is clicked, no other similar warnings are displayed, and Firefox can only warn when visiting websites that were breached in the last 2 months.
At this point, this feature is still a work in progress, and there’s no ETA as to when it could be released to users. The good thing is that users can try it out in Mozilla Firefox Nightly, though it goes without saying that it may not work exactly as expected since it’s still in the experimental stage.
Google Chrome has recently released a similar security update too. The Password Checkup extension for Google Chrome looks for any breach information on your username and passwords, again with the purpose of assisting you as you make your accounts more secure.
