Add-on created in collaboration with visual effects studio

Firefox has just received a new official extension, as Mozilla has released the so-called Extended Color Management add-on.

As you could easily figure out by simply reading its name, this extension is supposed to provide users with more control over the color management settings on their devices.

And given it’s aimed at Firefox, the add-on gives users the option to disable the color management configuration enabled on the operating system, therefore allowing the browser to control all settings.

Mozilla says it has developed this extension in partnership with visual effects studio Industrial Light & Magic specifically to make it easier to view the intended colors.

“Firefox by default uses color management from the operating system to optimize and render colors and images to enhance the browsing experience of its users. With the extension, creators and their vendors can now disable color management, then simply restart the Firefox browser so that the colors of graphics or videos are consistent, even across different operating units. This allows media engineers to make consistent and reliable assumptions about the color pipeline between the content shown in a browser and the actual pixel values sent to the computer’s display,” Mozilla explains.

Extension already available for download

The new extension is already available for download, and according to the official listing on the Firefox add-on store, it was published some 10 days ago.

“With this extension, Firefox offers creators a turnkey solution to simply turn off in-browser color management when sharing content between color-calibrated and matched displays, so that both Lucasfilm and remote partners can see the intended colors and view ‘dailies’ more easily than before. This extension puts Firefox in a unique position to contribute to the movie-making magic by improving remote collaboration amongst studios, as well as independent creatives,” Mozilla says.

Needless to say, the extension is completely free regardless of the platform where Firefox is installed.
