Motorola unveiled its Moto Z smartphones with modular accessories last June and the devices have been really appealing to the market. Aside from their premium specs, Motorola provided additional functionality with the Moto Mods.

Motorola will surely be announcing a successor to the flagship Moto Z this year and the latest report from Techdroider shows that the phone might come with iris scanning technology. Motorola filed a patent application describing an iris scanner for smartphones.

The iris scanner would be placed at the front of the phone and it would read the unique characteristics found on the user’s iris in order to unlock the device, identify the owner, and even conduct transactions.

The iris scanner on the Galaxy Note 7 had the capacity to unlock apps that contained sensitive information and Samsung was even considering a partnership with financial institutions for allowing users to authenticate on the network.

Fingerprint button in the front and 4GB of RAM

Motorola’s patent application also reveals a dedicated fingerprint button on the front of the phone, as opposed to a scanner embedded on the home button. It’s possible that Motorola could equip the new Moto Z with an iris scanner, while also keeping the fingerprint scanner for increased security.

This is just speculation at this point, but if the Moto Z 2017 indeed comes with an iris scanner, it would drive up its appeal, and its price too. Moto Z 2017 would also be a strong competitor against Samsung’s Galaxy S8, also rumored to come with an iris scanner.

The next Moto Z is expected to feature compatibility with Moto Mods, while Motorola could announce new such modular accessories during the launch of the new phone. Moto Z 2017 was recently spotted in benchmark with a 1.9GHz octa-core Snapdragon 835 SoC and 4GB of RAM. The phone appeared to run Android 7.1.1 Nougat and it could be announced in a few months.
