Shang Tsung returns from the dead to rob you blind

After releasing several character packs and skins, NetherRealm Studios decided to reach again in the pockets of fans and grab some more cash with a bonus campaign and a few familiar faces. Thus the intricate storyline of Mortal Kombat 11 is once again twisted as the faith of realms is manipulated by Shang Tsung, while the combat moves to a few new locations, and the fighters learn a few new tricks. Read on to find out why Aftermath can be described rather as a foul aftertaste.

After showering us with unlockable, bonus pre-order and post-release DLC characters, Aftermath dusts off some familiar faces like Sheeva or Sindel. The new story picks up the events right at the end of Mortal Kombat 11, the plans of Raiden and Liu Kang being derailed by the sudden appearance of Shang Tsung, Fujin, and Nightwolf. The already hard-to-follow plot of the base game gets twisted around a few more times and after roughly three hours of fights and cinematics, you will see a new good or bad ending unfold, based on your final choice.

The twists themselves are predictable just as the adventures of a kindergarten storybook, but the conclusion of the add-on remains vague on purpose. It will be up to NetherRealm to choose their favorite ending as canon and untangle the mess of the story in the next major iteration.

After the very short story is done you can challenge yourself again in the Towers or multiplayer matches. Just as Spawn, Joker, or the Terminator had nothing to do with the story, we receive again a new character which comes from a different world to serve justice: the Robocop. He is a very slow fighter, but one who can do tremendous damage from afar. The balance is not really affected by the introduction of the new characters, but they do not feel as fresh as they could have.

Conclusion

We mentioned in the beginning a foul aftertaste, which shows up as soon as you see the bill: this very short and thin adventure will set you back $40 / €40. For this amount, you get three new characters and two-three hours of a convoluted story. Everything else like the new Friendship finishers, the new arenas, and the new Stage Fatalities are part of a free update for the main game. On the one hand, this is great, since those who already own the game can enjoy the new mechanics without extra costs. On the other hand, this makes the Aftermath DLC look even skinnier and way too overpriced.

If you are a hardcore fan you can enjoy a rainy afternoon going through the story and pointing out the plot holes. After that, you are left with three new characters to go through the same towers or to challenge yourself in online battles. As thus we can only recommend Mortal Kombat 11 Aftermath only after a serious discount – there is nothing in the DLC that cannot wait to be tried until the price tag gets fairer.
