KB4284835 is this month’s update for Windows 10 version 1803

The number of reports pointing to failed installs hitting Windows 10 cumulative update KB4284835 is increasing, though for the time being, Microsoft is yet to acknowledge such problems.

KB4284835 is the cumulative update that the Redmond-based software giant published this month for Windows 10 April 2018 Update, and according to the official KB page, the company is aware of just a single issue that has nothing to do with failed installs.

As I reported yesterday, a small number of users started complaining of installation issues with cumulative update KB4284835 shortly after the Patch Tuesday rollout kicked off, and now we’re seeing more such reports on several channels.

There are multiple complaints in this regard post on Microsoft’s Community forums (here, here, and here), on Reddit, and in the comment section of my original article on failed KB4284835 installs.

How the update fails

The symptoms are pretty much the same in all cases. KB4284835 either fails to install and pushes users back to the desktop before undoing changes, boots to a black screen, or appears to be installed successfully only to be then re-offered to the same systems, asking for a machine restart to complete the process.

Our reader AES2 explains: “Many systems don't run critical software until after an installed update gets rebooted. That includes the one I'm on right now, and after three reboots it still wants to be rebooted. This is just the latest in Windows Update fails that has caused me huge unbillable time with monthly clients.”

Reader tepe experiences similar problems: “The KB4284835 2018-06 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1803 for x64-based Systems (KB4284835) has failed and it loops and I can not effort to shut down the PC as it takes about 60+ mins to be operational (installs, fails, backs out and reboot again etc) again.”

It’s still hard to determine how widespread these issues actually are, but we’ll continue to monitor these channels and see if there’s indeed a major glitch hitting this month’s April 2018 Update release.
