Microsoft’s working to expand its Windows 10 Mobile device lineup, and in addition to the Lumia 950 and 950 XL, both of which are currently up for grabs, and the Lumia 550 affordable model, the company is also preparing a mid-range handset that could launch soon.

Although Redmond has never confirmed the existence of what’s likely to be called Lumia 850, information coming from people with knowledge of the matter indicates that a successor to the Lumia 830 is very likely to be introduced in early 2016 with Windows 10 Mobile.

And cases that have been spotted online indeed seem to attest that Lumia 850 is part of Microsoft’s Windows 10 Mobile plans.

Photos published by GizmoChina and revealing cases designed for the Lumia 850 disclose the typical Lumia design, but keep in mind that the phone showing up in these pictures could actually be just a render or a dummy used for the case.

Rumored specs

Lumia 850 will be mainly designed to be an “affordable flagship,” just like the Lumia 830, and could come with a screen of at least 5.2 inches and a maximum of 5.7 inches, with the upper limit said to have more chances to make it to production.

The screen resolution will probably be 1080x1920 pixels, and the device will be powered by a Snapdragon 617 processor and come with an Adreno 405 GPU.

If these photos are of the actual Lumia 850, the device could come in three different colors, namely black, green, and blue, but availability could depend on the market.

Expect more information regarding the new Lumia model to emerge in the coming weeks, as the device is likely to make its public debut in early 2016, probably after Windows Phone is released for Windows Phone handsets. This should happen in late January or early February, according to sources.
