Windows Lite is one of Microsoft’s most ambitious projects these days, as it’s supposed to finally provide the company with a powerful rival to Chrome OS.

And while the company remains tight-lipped on everything related to this new version of Windows, Twitter user WalkingCat has discovered new mentions of Windows Lite that confirm the project advances.

Of course, these do not reveal any new details about Lite OS, but on the other hand, they show that Microsoft is hard at work on getting it ready for the market.

Windows Lite will be based on the same idea as Chrome OS, and is supposed to tackle the same markets, including the education sector.

Windows Lite details at Build

Interestingly, Windows Lite is also projected to give birth to a new product category that includes foldable dual-screen devices. Microsoft is likely to launch its very own device based on this approach, the eagerly-anticipated Surface Andromeda, but the company would rely on its partner ecosystem to provide users with more affordable choices.

Windows Lite will come down to apps in the Microsoft Store, but according to people familiar with Microsoft’s plans, the company is also looking into several methods that could allow Win32 software to be used as well. The software giant is exploring multiple options, including cloud-based tech, to make this happen, but a final decision hasn’t been made just yet.

As for the release date of Windows Lite, very little is known at this point, but we’re guessing the target could be the fall of this year.

Microsoft is expected to share details on this project at the upcoming Build developer conference, especially because it needs devs to create apps that would then help the new dual-screen form factor gain traction. Build takes place in May, so expect some official words on this project in just a couple of months.
