Samsung could bring it to the market with S10

In-display fingerprint sensors have been one of the most discussed topics in the last few months, mostly because tech giants like Apple and Samsung were believed to be looking into bringing this tech to their own devices.

But while neither made this happen, competition in this particular side of the market is increasing, and according to a new report, more suppliers are investing in developing this feature.

Digitimes writes that Fingerprint Cards (FPC), Goodix, Silead and Synaptics have all invested aggressively in the development of in-display fingerprint sensors for smartphones, even though Apple and Samsung are yet to actively begin projects to bring this tech to their models.

The cited source, however, notes that Samsung is the big winner of this new trend, as both optical and ultrasonic sensors are based on displays manufactured by Samsung Display. The South Korean firm has also produced the OLED panel used on the iPhone X.

Apple sticking with Face ID, Samsung going for fingerprint sensors

And while Apple and Samsung seem to be the ones starting these new trends, the two are expected to embrace different strategies for their future products.

Apple, for example, is very likely to remain committed to facial recognition, so all future iPhones should give up on fingerprint sensors, instead going all-in on Face ID. Apple will launch three different iPhone models this year, and all three will come with Face ID.

Samsung, on the other hand, is still working on a fingerprint sensor embedded into the glass, and rumor has it that the Galaxy S10 is likely to feature this tech. The S10 marks the tenth anniversary of the Galaxy S lineup, and Samsung wants to bring several innovations to the device, including the said fingerprint sensor.

The Samsung Galaxy S10 is projected to launch in early 2019, most likely in January, one month earlier than the usual given the company’s attempt to make up for slow sales of the existing model.
