Beloved classic point & click adventure series Monkey Island is getting another game with the original series creators, Ron Gilbert and Dave Grossman, involved. The new game will be a sequel to Return to Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge, and it’s going to be developed by Terrible Toybox, the studio led by Monkey Island creator Ron Gilbert.

The project is the result of the collaboration between Terrible Toybox, Lucasfilm Games and Devolver Digital. Not much else is know about the game except for the fact that it will be released this year, which is great news for fans of the adventure games genre.

A trailer meant to announce the revival of the Monkey Island series was also released today, but it doesn’t shed light on anything related to the actual game. It’s also been confirmed that Dominic Armanto will reprise his role as Guybrush Threepwood, the series’ legendary hero.

The upcoming Monkey Island game is designed and written by Ron Gilbert and Dave Grossman, while the score is composed by Michael Land, Peter McConnel, and Clint Bajakian. I think it’s safe to assume that game will be released on PC, but anything beyond that would be pure speculation.

The Monkey Island series debuted back in the 90s and instantly won the hearts of adventure game fans. The first four games of the franchise were developed by Lucasfilm Games, whereas a fifth that was meant to revive the series in a new format was produced by Telltale Games.

The newly announced Monkey Island game would the sixth title in the series and, hopefully, a return to the origins. Although Tim Schafer, the founder of Double Fine Productions, isn’t among the brilliant minds working on the next Monkey Island game, the collaborative effort among Ron Gilbert and Dave Grossman is likely to produce the same results.

If you’re a fan of adventure games and haven’t played the Monkey Island series, now would be a good time to check them out, they’re definitely a must-play.
