The Israel-based manufacturer modu, developer of the lightest mobile phone in the world, announced today the first modu jacket portfolio for the modu phone. The new jackets are meant to complement the handset and are the first of an entire series to be launched in 2009. The company stated that these products would become available in the second quarter of the year, as soon as the modu phone and the manufacturer's ecosystem get launched for the first time.

The mobu phone is a tiny, modular and sleek device that comes with all the mobile functionality one would need, while also including a music player and a mass storage of 2GB of memory. The handset includes an innovative user interface as well as a seven-key keypad that enables functionality even without a modu jacket. According to the company, the modu ecosystem (phone plus jackets) is able to offer a wide range of possibilities.

The manufacturer also announced that the jacket lineup would include a modu night jacket, a street-art jacket, a classic jacket, as well as an express jacket. Each of them is able to provide new user experience levels, while also offering different functionalities, graphic interfaces and style.

“modu is turning the notion of a ‘one-size-fits-all’ mobile phone experience on its ear,” said Dov Moran, founder and chief executive officer of modu. “Consumers want a mobile phone that can keep up with their dynamic lifestyles. The combination of the eye-catching modu phone with the new modu jackets offers not only personalized style but affordable updates without the costly expense of buying a new phone.”

The company will come to the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next week with both its new modu phone and the new jackets. The manufacturer also plans on announcing global distribution for its ecosystem, as well as partnership agreements, product news and manufacturing and production capabilities.
