MKVToolNix developer Moritz Bunkus announced the release of MKVToolNix 15.0.0 "Duel with the Devil" open-source and cross-platform MKV (Matroska) manipulation utility for GNU/Linux, macOS, and Microsoft Windows platforms.

MKVToolNix 15.0.0 represents the monthly maintenance update of the application designed to help users merge or split MKV files, as well as to extract or add audio, video, or subtitles from/to these containers. The biggest changes in this release is the improvement of support for new track header elements, which are useful for video archiving purposes.

Part of the implementation, the developer managed to add support for the "video projection" track header attributes to various of MKVToolNix's components, including mkvmerge, mkvpropedit, mkvinfo, as well as the MKVToolNix GUI. The mkvpropedit and MKVToolNix GUI components also received support for editing the video colour attributes.

Multiplex tool enhancements, new options, bug fixes

MKVToolNix 15.0.0 adds some enhancements to the multiplex tool, such as a new option "Only use the first source file that contains a video track" option in the Multiplexer -> Output preferences to allow only the use of source files that contain video tracks for setting the destination file name, and a new "Set destination file name from selected file’s name" entry to the "Source files" context menu.

"It will force the GUI to consider the selected file to be the reference for automatically setting the file name, no matter which file was originally added as the first file. It will also force setting the destination file name once if automatic destination file name generation is turned off in the preferences," explains Moritz Bunkus in the release announcement.

There are a bunch of bug fixes included in MKVToolNix 15.0.0, which should improve DTS handling in mkvmerge and the header editor in MKVToolNix GUI. The "--disable-update-check" option was added to the the configure file to disable automatic updates when building MKVToolNix from sources, and the "--colour-matrix" option was renamed to "--colour-matrix-coefficients."

Other than that, it looks like this release removes the keyboard shortcuts for switching between different tools for the multiplexer as they overlapped with others. You can download MKVToolNix 15.0.0 for GNU/Linux, macOS, and Microsoft Windows operating systems right now through our web portal or upgrade your installation using the built-in update system of the app.
