MKVToolNix developer Moritz Bunkus announced this past weekend the release and immediate availability of MKVToolNix 12.0.0 "Trust / Lust," a new maintenance update to the open-source and cross-platform MKV (Matroska) manipulation app.

While not a major milestone, MKVToolNix 12.0.0 is a recommended update for all users running MKVToolNix 11.0.0 or a previous version because it includes an important bug fix in the HEVC/H.265 code to avoid generating invalid files. Additionally, the new release comes with an important warning for Windows users.

"Windows users should note that starting with v11.0.0 the GUI requires Microsoft’s 'Media Foundation' framework to be installed. This is the case out of the box on the consumer versions of Windows other than the N and KN variants of Windows 10. You’ll have to download and install it separate on N and KN," said Moritz Bunkus.

Here's what's new in MKVToolNix 12.0.0

Changes of MKVToolNix 12.0.0 include a new keyboard shortcut (Ctrl+Shift+Space) for toggling the selection of the current item in all tree views, support for the .cue extension in the "Open Chapter File" dialog of the MKVToolNix GUI, and support for editing the "date" segment information field in the header editor.

A new option called "–no-date" was implemented in both the mkvmerge components and MKVToolNix GUI's multiplexer to prevent the "date" field from being written to the segment information headers. Additionally, the MKVToolNix GUI received improvements for Preferences -> Job actions, type "play audio file."

As usual, mkvmerge received the most attention in this new maintenance update of MKVToolNix, this time improving the MPEG TS reader, AAC parser, MP4 reader, and HEVC/H.265 parser. The full changelog is attached below for more details and you can download MKVToolNix 12.0.0 for GNU/Linux, macOS and Windows right now.
