MKVToolnix developer Moritz Bunkus released a new major branch of his popular, open-source and cross-platform MKV (Matroska) manipulation software, versioned 10.0.0.

That's right, MKVToolnix 10.0.0 is finally here, and it's dubbed "To Drown In You," but don't get too excited because it doesn't bring any massive changes to the functionality, nor the graphical user interface (GUI). In fact, MKVToolnix 10.0.0 appears to be a small maintenance update over the previous 9.x series.

According to the release notes, MKVToolnix 10.0.0 improves both the AVC/h.264 and HEVC/h.265 parsers of the mkvmerge component to be able to drop all frames of a Matroska file before the first key frame because it looks like they can't be decoded properly anyway, as well as to drop timestamps from the source container when there aren't any frames emitted for the respective timestamp.

Additionally, it adds a workaround to the HEVC/h.265 parser for some invalid values discovered on the "default display window" in the VUI parameters. "Another month, another release of MKVToolNix: v10.0.0. It’s solely a bug fix release, and the number of fixes in this release is on the small side. Nothing’s changed for packagers," said Moritz Bunkus.

MP4 reader and MP3 packetizer improvements, bug fixes

It appears that mkvmerge received the most attention during the development cycle of MKVToolnix 10.0.0, and among other updated components we can mention the MP4 and Matroska readers, as well as the MP3 packetizer. The mkvextract component received a fix for SSA and ASS extraction support.

Attached below you can find the full changelog of the MKVToolnix 10.0.0 release, which you can download for GNU/Linux, macOS, and Microsoft Windows operating systems right now from our website. Despite the minor improvements it ships with, MKVToolnix 10.0.0 is a recommended update for all users of the 9.x series.
