Based on his performance in “Whiplash” alone, Miles Teller is a very talented actor, a young thespian who’s just getting started in this industry, but who’s being offered the best working opportunities, through a mix of indie films and big-budget studio productions.
He only needs to learn how to promote his work in the press without coming across as an arrogant, terribly infuriating douche, which is the case with his latest interview with Esquire Magazine.
Miles Teller is a douche and doesn’t mind if you think it of him
The full interview is available at the link above, but the magazine actually uses another D-word to refer to him and his “I couldn’t care less” attitude. We can’t reproduce it here. The piece concedes that Teller is talented and even interesting as a person, but it also makes it obvious that he’s not the kind of guy you’d necessarily love spending time with.
It also includes gems like these two:
“He says he wants to contribute to the body of great acting in the world, to the... [expletive], he can't find the term - cache? catalog? canon? Whatever, you know what he means. He thinks he has something to offer.”
“His admittedly limited body of work so far, his oeuvre - a word you define and spell for him, so who's the [douche] now? - is pretty great.”
It depicts Teller as an insufferable young man who could use some manners and some consistency in his behavior. For instance, it just doesn’t do to take out your iPhone to show off a photo of your newly-toned back muscles if you’re going to ask someone to cut a steak for you into bite-sized pieces because you’re not strong enough to do it.
Obviously, some lessons of vocabulary would also come in handy for Teller, from the tone of the piece.
On the other hand, Teller is unapologetic about the kind of person he tries to come across as, and Esquire gives him that: he’s a douche alright, but he’s carving his own way in the annals of cinema, so he deserves some credit for that, at the very least.
Miles Teller lashes out on Twitter, gets support from his “Fantastic 4” co-stars
Whichever way you’re looking at it, this Esquire piece is a horrible way to launch Teller’s promo tour for “Fantastic 4,” a movie that’s already been met with harsh criticism and mockery from fans, based on the trailers released so far.
Esquire can do lighter, less serious pieces (in addition to the heavier stuff, with actors like DiCaprio, Bale or Hardy) and it guarantees plenty of exposure, so to blow an interview with them means you probably have to be King Douche to do it.
According to Teller, we shouldn’t be paying attention to this particular piece because it’s misleading. He even tweeted at the mag to let them know that he finds their insinuation of him being a douche or an “[expletive]-hole” misleading and offensive.
His “Fantastic 4” co-stars, Kate Mara, Jamie Bell and Michael B. Jordan, also rushed to his side, as was to be expected. MTV’s Josh Horowitz did the same, as you can see from their tweets below.
So far, Esquire stands by its story.
