A reboot of the mobile platform is now expected

Microsoft has often been criticized for leaving Windows phones behind and focusing on rival platforms like Android and iOS, and while everyone sees the death of Windows 10 Mobile as imminent, it looks like the software giant has different plans.

A new report coming from Thurrott reveals that Microsoft is internally working on a reboot of the mobile platform that could bring new updates both in terms of software and hardware.

Specifically, the report claims Microsoft is internally testing first-party hardware, which means that the company is working on a phone that could be launched with an updated operating system.

There’s a separate branch of Windows Mobile just for this device, the aforementioned source continues, as Microsoft wants to give the operating system a refresh as well in order to make sure that the new phone is backed up by perfectly optimized and capable software.

A new UI for Windows phones

It turns out that the goal right now is to deliver what are being called “new experiences” with the new Windows phone, with Microsoft reportedly planning to create a new user interface that would be different from the one currently available on phones.

Does Microsoft plan to give up on live tiles? That’s very unlikely, given that this is one of the most praised features of the mobile operating systems and they also made it to the desktop with the release of Windows 8 on the Start screen and with Windows 10 also on the Start menu.

As far as the release date is concerned, nothing is certain right now, but the source speculates that it could take approximately one year until all products are finalized.

In other words, it’s a safe bet to say that Microsoft’s mobile reboot could land by this time next year, but it’s worth noting that a delay is possible at any time given that it’s all work in progress.

On the other hand, this report comes like a breath of fresh air for mobile users who thought that their favorite mobile OS was dead, though without confirmation from Microsoft, the uncertainty continues to be at a painfully high level.
