The Task Manager is finally getting a facelift

Even though it’s an essential tool for so many Windows power users, the Task Manager has so far been left behind by Microsoft when it comes to the modern overhaul that the rest of the operating system has already received.

In other words, the Windows 11 Task Manager looks pretty much like the Windows 10 sibling, minus the rounded corners that are available at the operating system level anyway.

However, the Task Manager still lacks a modern UI and essential features like a dark mode. And it goes without saying these have all been among the top feature requests for users out there.

The Task Manager overhaul

But as it turns out, the Redmond-based software giant has finally received the message, so it’s now working on a major overhaul of the Task Manager.

Twitter user FireCube has discovered that the most recent version of Windows 11 preview, which was released to users enrolled in the Dev channel of the Windows Insider program this week, comes with a hidden Task Manager overhaul that signals an incoming facelift for the app.

In other words, the company has started the work on refreshing the Task Manager, and while the whole thing is still in its early days, there’s no doubt an update on this front is coming.

As said, the existing version is rather unpolished, but the good news is that it confirms a dark mode is coming to the Task Manager as well.

As it turns out, Microsoft wants the new Task Manager to align with the rest of the OS in terms of user interface, so all sections will now be listed in a dedicated sidebar on the left side of the screen. It remains to be seen when this visual overhaul would go live for users, but for now, you’d better not hold your breath for it.
