Upgrading users from Windows 7 to Windows 10 is Microsoft’s top priority after the new operating system became available in July 2015, and this is one of the reasons the company is actually offering it free of charge to those running a previous version of Windows.

And in a new post used to brag about how fast adoption of Windows 10 is going, Microsoft has also revealed that the new operating system’s adoption is faster than Windows 7’s by nearly 140 percent.

In other words, in the first five months after launch, Windows 10 outpaced Windows 7 as far as the number of installs is concerned, and this is quite big, given the fact that Microsoft really needed the new operating system to succeed after the Windows 8 flop.

And speaking of Windows 8, Microsoft has some comparison stats in this case too. The company says that Windows 10 adoption is 400 percent faster than Windows 8’s, which means that four times more users installed the new OS than its predecessor in the first five months on the market.

Consumers still love Windows 10 despite criticism

Surprisingly, despite the criticism that mounted over the aggressive upgrade strategy and the privacy settings that Microsoft enables by default in Windows 10, consumers are still very interested in the new operating system. Or at least, that’s what Microsoft says.

“We’re seeing increased preference for Windows 10 with consumers. Since Black Friday, US retail PC share* for Windows 10 grew 16 points to 62% compared to the prior four weeks.  Windows 10 mix of PCs rose to 87% from 58% prior to the holiday,” it notes.

And obviously, enterprises are also looking at Windows 10 as a possible upgrade. In fact, this is the market on which Microsoft is focusing the most, as 55 percent of its revenue comes from this particular industry.

And according to the company itself, enterprises and organizations in the education sector have already started testing Windows 10, and their migration could begin anytime soon.

“We are also seeing accelerating and unprecedented demand for Windows 10 among enterprise and education customers. As of today, more than 76% of our enterprise customers are in active pilots of Windows 10, and we now have over 22 million devices running Windows 10 across enterprise and education customers,” Microsoft continues.

For the moment, however, Windows 7 continues to be the leading desktop operating system on the market with approximately 50 percent while Windows 10 is still trailing behind with 10 percent.
