Microsoft has recently signed a memorandum of understanding with the city of Dubai to develop its own font that’s seen as a way to “achieve leadership and innovation.”

While it’s not yet very clear how a simple font can help achieve that, both sides are very excited about the agreement and say that the so-called Dubai font will be available in both Arabic and English.

Dubai will thus become the first city in the world that has its very own font, and Microsoft’s CEO Satya Nadella points out that the company will do its best to successfully complete the project at the highest standards.

“We are looking forward to further bolstering our strong relations with Dubai, which falls within the priorities of Dubai’s march for innovation in utilising digital technology to improve standards of living for its people,” Nadella explains, according to Gulf News.

To be used on Microsoft software

The other side, which is represented by HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Executive Council, was very excited to work with the world’s number one software giant for such an important project.

“The Emirate of Dubai, as usual, and with its ongoing efforts to occupy the top rank internationally in various areas, will create a new and memorable imprint in the digital world through this initiative, which is in line with its clear strategy based on a solid foundation in a move designed to reflect the vision of our wise leadership to achieve leadership and innovation,” he said.

In case you’re wondering why Dubai needs its very own font, it’s very simple: the city wants to use the Dubai font in all Microsoft products sold in the country, so local software, such as Microsoft Office and Windows, will have a very unique touch when it lands to customers in the country.
