The company announces new maintenance in China

Microsoft Teams is a platform that plenty of companies rely on these days, with the pandemic generating an adoption boost that not even Microsoft itself expected.

In China, however, Microsoft Teams runs on the China Premium network, using the public Internet to be available for local users.

However, Microsoft has announced a new maintenance session (via Neowin) whose purpose is to improve the experience with Microsoft Teams for Chinese users when connecting to meetings hosted in another region.

In other words, Chinese users working for multinational companies should eventually be provided with improved performance when joining Microsoft Teams meetings.

How to prevent possible issues

But during the maintenance window, which started on August 24 and is scheduled to come to an end on September 30, Chinese users could experience various audio and video issues when joining Microsoft Teams meetings, Microsoft says.

“The maintenance window started on 24th August 2022 and is planned to complete by 30th, September 2022, UTC.  During this time period any users in China who join a Teams meeting hosted in another data center outside the Asia Pacific region will use China's regular cross-border network service.  This could result in poor quality for audio, video, and screen sharing,” the company explains.

One way to prevent this is to be the first person or client to join a given meeting, so the meeting will therefore be hosted in Asia Pacific data centers.

“However, if China users did not start or be first one to join the meeting, and the meeting includes users from other regions, they may experience poor quality for audio, video and screen sharing.  Most likely the meeting is hosted in another region.  In this scenario China users are connecting through the public Internet, which might be impacted by cross-border network congestion,” Microsoft further notes.
