The Chromium project is getting dual-screen device support

Microsoft is working on adding dual-screen device to the Chromium project, which essentially means that all browsers using this engine would then support the new form factor.

Microsoft is one of the companies that are betting big on dual-screen devices, and the company announced the Surface Duo Android phone and the Surface Neo dual-screen PC laptop powered by Windows 10X last year.

While the Surface Neo has already been pushed back to 2021, it’s believed the Surface Duo is still on track for a 2020 launch.

Microsoft is working on dual-screen emulation for the Chromium engine, as spotted by WL, and right now, this feature works on the Surface Duo and the Samsung Galaxy Fold.

In other words, dual-screen device support wouldn’t be limited to just a single operating system, and this makes total sense given Microsoft itself is also targeting non-Windows platforms with this form factor.

So the final goal to bring dual-screen device support to the Chromium engine comes to the benefit of Microsoft itself, especially now that this is the engine that’s powering Microsoft Edge. So once the software giant makes this happen, together with its partners, including Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge would be able to work on dual-screen devices, both on Windows and non-Windows platforms, natively.

Needless to say, Chromium browsers would be able to adapt to the screen mode on the dual-screen devices, as they could be used with just one display or with both of them for increased screen estate.

For now, the feature is still in development, which means it doesn’t yet have an ETA, but it shouldn’t take too long before the Chromium engine is updated with dual-screen device support. And this makes total sense given the new form factor is evolving fast and more companies embrace it for their device lineups.
