New versions of included apps now available for download

Microsoft has just updated several Office apps for Windows 10, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Sway, all of which are offered as universal apps.

With this update, the version number is pushed to 17.6326.10211.0, but as it happens with Microsoft app and OS releases lately, no information is available on the included changes.

The Windows 10 version of Office is available free of charge on devices running Microsoft’s new operating system, but in order to benefit from editing capabilities on large screens, an Office 365 subscription is needed. Otherwise, all Office apps included in the suite are only document viewers that can be used to open documents, spreadsheets, or presentation files.

Universal apps

Right now, the same Office mobile apps are available on both Windows 10 for PCs and Windows 10 Mobile, so these improvements most likely bring bug fixes and other performance enhancements supposed to make them run more smoothly on all devices.

Details are missing mostly because Microsoft no longer provides a change log until there is something really worth mentioning, so it’s probably safe to assume that this new release only brings small improvements and changes to the aforementioned apps.

The same is valid for OS updates too, but it’s no secret that this decision has attracted more criticism from the community, especially because users want to always be in full control over what they install on their PCs. Microsoft says it’s listening to feedback but is yet to change this highly criticized policy.

Just like all the other Windows 10 apps, the updates are shipped through the store, so if you haven’t changed the default store configuration, the new versions might already be there because new versions are installed automatically. Otherwise, simply launch the Windows Store and go over to the Downloads and updates section to manually check for the new versions.
