New version of the browser now up for grabs

Microsoft has released a new version of Edge Dev, bringing the browser to build 78.0.256.2 on the supported desktop platforms (Windows 7, 8.1, 10, and macOS).

The rollout, however, has been suspended shortly after the build was published due to unnamed problems, and Microsoft says you should expect the download links to go live again next week.

This new release comes with several welcome additions, and one of the most notable is the ad blocker that was originally introduced in the Chromium engine last year.

As a result, this update brings Microsoft Edge in line with the rest of the Chromium browsers trying to block abusive links, eventually making the whole online experience cleaner and more secure.

Additionally, this Dev browser update also includes Collections, the feature that was initially implemented in Edge Canary under a dedicated flag. With Collections, users can manage saved websites more effectively, and the very same version also includes the ability to export Collections to Microsoft Word.

Removed functionality

Microsoft Edge Dev also gets support for the native Windows 10 Share functionality, making sharing pages and content much easier. Needless to say, this is only available on Windows 10 and not on older Windows or macOS.

Microsoft has also added a new policy for separate site lists for IE mode and standalone IE and enabled caret browsing in IE mode windows.

What’s also worth knowing is that this update removes some functionality of the browser, including the prompt to restart Edge to install an update from Application Guard windows. The Global Media Control button added to Chromium has also been removed, and the browser now comes without some non-functional context menu items in Reading View mode.

You can read the full changelog in the box after the jump and then download Microsoft Edge for Windows and macOS using these links. Remember that this is still a dev build, which means that not everything is likely to work exactly as expected and bugs are something that could show up at any moment.
