The release of the Surface Pro 9 represents a major turning point in the way users can repair their Microsoft devices, and a recent iFixit teardown comes to confirm this.

The Surface Pro 9 has been crowned the most repairable Surface ever created by Microsoft, as parts like the SSD and the battery can be easily replaced without necessarily being particularly skilled in this direction.

However, Microsoft told iFixit that it wants to expand on this repairability approach by releasing dedicated manuals and guides for the Surface Pro 9. The whole thing is projected to happen later this year.

In 2023, the company will also roll out spare parts that should make it a lot easier for consumers to upgrade devices and replace faulty components without having to pay a premium for professional services.

“The Surface Pro 9 service guides which include full repair instructions will be available publicly for download by the end of this calendar year on the Microsoft Support site. See Microsoft Service Guides: Download Surface Service Guides from Official Microsoft Download Center,” the company said.

“We are currently working with a major US retailer to build out our authorized repair network and bring repair options closer to our customers. This will become available in early 2023. We are also building out capability to deliver broad availability of spare parts for Independent repairers and Consumers targeting the first half of 2023.”

At this point, it’s not yet clear if Microsoft plans to use the same approach for other Surface models, but the change of strategy is without a doubt good news for customers across the world. The Surface Pro 9 received a repairability score of 7 out of 10 points in the iFixit teardown, therefore becoming one on the easiest-to-repair devices out there.
