New Microsoft Teams notifications show up on macOS

The adoption of Microsoft Teams has truly skyrocketed in the last few months as the world entered a global lockdown and more employees started working from home.

But at the same time, Microsoft itself has been working on plenty of improvements for Microsoft Teams, including a new notification system that would integrate with the operating system the client is running on.

More specifically, what Microsoft wanted was native notification support on macOS and Windows 10, as the desktop client of Microsoft Teams is currently using its very own notification system.

According to the official roadmap, the new feature wasn’t expected until this fall, but according to a recent tweet published by Microsoft MVP Matt Wade, the native notification feature is already rolling out for some users.

New notification style settings in Microsoft Teams

As it turns out, the new notification integrated at system level went live on macOS recently, but some say they’re live on Windows 10 too. For now, I’m not seeing any change for the notification system available for my Microsoft Teams client on Windows 10, so there’s a chance that the rollout is happening gradually for users across the world.

When the feature goes live, users will be allowed to choose between native notifications or Teams’ integrated notification system right from the settings screen. There will be a new Mac or Windows option (depending on what operating system you are running) in the settings screen under the notification section, where users can enable the native notification behavior for the desktop Microsoft Teams client.

Most likely, Microsoft will also release an announcement when general availability is reached, so for the time being, it’s better to consider the whole thing just an early experiment whose rollout would advance even further in the coming weeks.
