Microsoft has just announced at its IFA 2017 press conference that the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update would be rolled out to users on October 17, most likely as a staged release just like the previous versions.

Terry Myerson, Executive Vice President of the Windows and Devices Group, used the show in Berlin not only to praise Windows 10, but also to highlight some of the recent devices launched by Microsoft partners, all of which are built around the features that are part of the operating system.

“We are coming up on our fourth major update to Windows 10, and our mission with these updates is to create a platform that inspires your creativity. We see students playing and learning with Minecraft, lawyers creating with words, accountants painting with numbers, designers sharing their ideas with slides, and engineers crafting in code. Creativity is universal and it’s aspirational in its nature,” Myerson explained.

500 million Windows devices

Furthermore, Myerson has also revealed updated numbers on Windows 10 adoption, revealing that no less than 500 million devices have already been updated to what he describes as “the most popular version of Windows on the planet.”

Oddly enough, third-party market research firms put Windows 7 on the first place with a market share that’s close to 50 percent, followed by Windows 10 with approximately half of that.

Even though Microsoft hasn’t specifically said it, there’s a chance the Fall Creators Update goes live for users gradually, as the company will work to fix compatibility issues with certain hardware and software configurations based on the feedback it receives during the rollout.

Most likely, the plan right now is to finalize the Fall Creators Update in late September or early October. Unfortunately, no word has been said on Windows 10 Mobile, as the smartphone platform appears to be left behind, with the feature2 update indeed in the queue, but without a release date just yet.
