Microsoft is believed to be working on a new mobile version of Minecraft, according to a teaser released by the company itself.

While specifics aren’t available, this aforementioned teaser appears to suggest that what Microsoft is aiming for is pushing Minecraft to the AR world, so this new title could more or less embrace the same idea as Pokemon Go.

The teaser shows Minecraft creative director Saxs Persson “accidentally” leaving his phone on a bench just in front of the Washington State Convention Center where the software giant currently holds its Build developer conference.

Someone finds Persson’s device and discovers the AR version of Minecraft. The phone itself is an Android device, and this could be an indication that Microsoft might release Minecraft AR for Android at first, with an iOS version likely to land at a later time.

More info coming May 17

Microsoft says it would share more information on the Minecraft game on May 17, but once again, the company does not provide any other details for the time being.

Microsoft stepping into the AR battle is something that comes as a natural continuation of all the efforts that the software giant made in the AR world.

Needless to say, Microsoft has what it takes to make Minecraft AR a hit, but this depends on a wide series of factors, including here not only availability, but also pricing. However, given how successful Pokemon Go eventually became, there’s no doubt there’s a huge potential for Minecraft to expand in this market, especially given the know-how and resources that Microsoft can use for the development of this project.

It remains to be seen what Minecraft AR would end up becoming, but for the time being, the video below is pretty much everything we get.
