New webcam to go live at Microsoft’s Surface event

Microsoft is planning a big Surface event this spring, and while an official confirmation isn’t yet offered, everybody expects it to take place in May.

In addition to a Microsoft Surface Laptop 4, whose specifications have already leaked, Microsoft is also likely to showcase a series of new peripherals, according to one report, with a webcam expected to be announced as well.

In case you’re wondering why Microsoft wants to launch a webcam, it all comes down to just one product: Microsoft Teams.

As you probably figured out already, 2020 has completely changed the way we work, and with many of us moving the office in the safety of our own homes, remote working solutions have become a must-have. This is the reason the adoption of Microsoft Teams has skyrocketed last year, and the Redmond-based software giant thinks this market still represents a good opportunity to grow in hardware too.

More peripherals coming

A webcam certified by Microsoft and working neatly with Microsoft Teams is what the software giant is probably aiming for, though for now, it looks like the company isn’t necessarily interested in top notch specs.

Because according to the cited source, the new Microsoft webcam wouldn’t even support 4K resolutions, so it’d stick with the current resolutions rather than offer a massive upgrade in this regard.

Needless to say, Microsoft hasn’t said a single thing about this new webcam, so for the time being, a certain dose of skepticism is still recommended. But of course, such a product unveiling perfectly makes sense given all of the above, with Microsoft expected to introduce several other peripherals that could be offered alongside the all-new Surface Laptop 4.

As a matter of fact, Microsoft is already selling a couple of cameras in its online stores, but these are currently way too many years old.
