My People is no longer being developed, Microsoft says

The debut of Windows 10 version 1909 earlier this month is an opportunity for Microsoft to reconsider its Windows 10 plans going forward, and unsurprisingly, these plans include giving up on some of the features and apps in the operating system.

This time, it’s the turn of My People to get the ax, as the software giant has confirmed that the app “is no longer being developed [and] it may be removed in a future update.”

My People is a Windows 10 feature that debuted in Windows 10 Fall Creators Update and was essentially offered as a faster way to communicate with favorite contacts. My People placed contact icons on the taskbar which when clicked expanded a series of communications options, such as email or Skype.

However, this feature has never gained traction, and given Microsoft decided to remove it, it’s pretty clear that only a few people actually used it.

People app not affected

At this point, it’s not known when My People would go dark once and for all, but there’s a chance this happens in the next feature update for Windows 10 due in the spring. Codenamed Windows 10 20H1, this update is already in preview stage as part of the Windows Insider program.

In the latest builds of Windows 10 20H1, however, My People is still there, so it’s likely the feature would be discontinued in a future preview release.

Previously, Microsoft removed several other Windows 10 apps and features, including Snipping Tool, whose functionality is being migrated to Snip & Sketch. Additionally, the company also discontinued Windows To Go and the Print 3D app.

The standard People app, which comes pre-loaded in Windows 10 and provides access to contacts from a stand-alone UI, will continue to be available in the operating system.
