Windows 10 will soon get another visual facelift on the desktop, in addition to the light theme that Microsoft is already working on for the 19H1 update.

The Redmond-based company will release an icon overhaul for the operating system, and a teaser that was dropped recently provides us with an early glimpse into how this could look like when it’s ready.

Microsoft has recently announced new icons for the Microsoft Office productivity suite, again with the purpose of completing the modern experience that the firm is aiming for in its software.

And as part of this facelift, Microsoft rolled out a bunch of screenshots to introduce the new icons. Among them, there’s also a photo that shows an improved Windows 10 desktop, with new icons for Mail, Photos, News, and others. You can see them by zooming in on the photo in the article.

Coming in Windows 10 19H1

Needless to say, these are just early versions of the new icons, and Microsoft is still experimenting with the design, though we expect the final designs to make their way to Windows 10 preview builds at some point in the coming months.

The next Windows 10 update is due in the spring of 2019, and it is currently being tested as part of the Windows Insider program.

However, aside from the light theme, no major visual change has been released until now, so Microsoft is currently testing all these updated icons internally.

There’s no doubt the release of a modern icon pack will be a controversial change in Windows 10, especially because this change could make the desktop feel less familiar for a significant number of users. Modernizing Windows, however, is something that has to be done, as the operating system still includes icons that haven’t been updated for more than a decade.
