Unreleased phone shows up in Microsoft tweet

Windows Phone is dead and with Windows 10 Mobile running on a pretty small number of devices, it’s not a surprise that so many people believe Microsoft is no longer interested in smartphones.

At one point supposed to be the big hero that saves Windows phones, the Surface Phone continues to be a dream that’s yet to come true, with several patents discovered in the last couple of years confirming that Microsoft has at least looked into technologies to build such a device.

Fast forward to yesterday and here’s a tweet from Microsoft Azure that gets everyone in the Windows phone community worked up about the possibility of finally getting a Surface Phone.

At first glance, the tweet is a super-boring message addressed to developers, as the Microsoft Azure team wanted to promote a free class on Node.js. But the photo used in the tweet is the one getting all the attention.

The surprise appearance

Microsoft used what seems to be an unreleased Windows phone and it was obviously just a matter of seconds until people started dreaming about the Surface Phone once again. There’s absolutely no word from Microsoft on the device showing up in the photo, but the company hasn’t removed the tweet either despite the craze it started, and this could be a sign that there might be something interesting happening in there.

As far as the Surface Phone itself is concerned, the most recent speculation on this model indicated that Microsoft was already testing a new smartphone under the closed doors, though no specifics were provided on when to expect the launch or at least a confirmation that it’s being worked on.

Microsoft does have patents for foldable phones and other features that could help build a truly advanced Surface Phone, but it’s not yet clear if the company really wants to push forward with plans to remain an active player in the mobile industry. CEO Satya Nadella also confirmed at some point that Microsoft wanted to build “the ultimate mobile device,” but as always, such plans can change overnight if a project does not make sense for the company.
