Teams will feature AI-based noise suppression

With the global health issue seemingly not coming to an end too soon, it’s pretty clear that many of us must get comfortable working from home.

And as part of the arsenal that we use to remain productive from our home office, Microsoft Teams is definitely playing a key role for tens of millions of people out there.

Microsoft has been working hard lately on improving the experience with Teams, and the company not only upgraded the underlying infrastructure, but it also added new capabilities. And Microsoft obviously won’t stop here, with more features already on their way.

One of them is an AI-based noise suppression system that should mute background noises to make sure the colleagues participating in the meeting hear nothing but your voice.

Coming to users with the November update

Spotted by WL, this new feature has recently been added to the Microsoft Teams roadmap, and the software giant has promised to ship it in November. In other words, we’re only a few weeks away from the moment it’s supposed to go live.

“AI-based, real-time noise suppression, will be added to Microsoft Teams. This feature will automatically remove unwelcome background noise during your meetings. AI-based noise suppression works by analyzing an individual’s audio feed and using specially trained deep neural networks to filter out the noise and retain only the speech signal.  This is an update to the existing noise suppression. Users will now have control over how much noise suppression they want. The “High” setting is new and will suppress more background noise,” Microsoft says.

Interestingly, the feature is supposed to come to the Windows desktop only, though I think that this is just the first platform getting it, with Microsoft to later update the rest of the Teams clients with similar functionality.
