14 DAY TRIAL // Microsoft may take the wraps off the new Surface Pro 6 and Surface Laptop 2 at the company’s October 2 event, and new details that made the rounds recently provide us with a closer look at what to expect.
A report from WinFuture reveals that most of the upgrades on the two models would take place under the hood, as in terms of looks, the new generations will be identical with their predecessors.
Despite rumors, USB-C won’t make its way to the new models, as Microsoft still doesn’t seem to be ready to embrace this connector.
Microsoft is believed to be working on a black version for at least one of the two devices, but no further details are available at this point. A black Surface has been rumored for quite a while now, and now this model could finally make its way to the market, though it’s expected that only the top-of-the-range configurations would feature it.
Upgraded hardware
By the looks of things, most of the changes would happen under the hood, and the cited source claims that Microsoft will upgrade the base model of the Surface Laptop. The device will be powered by an Intel Core i5-8250U quad-core SoC (1.6 GHz base clock, 3.6 GHz maximum) paired with 8GB RAM and 128GB SSD storage – 4GB RAM versions would no longer be available.
The Surface Pro 6, however, will still be sold with an Intel Core m3 processor paired with 4GB RAM.
An Intel Core i7 chip option will also be offered, though no specifics on the generation are available for now, and users will be allowed to go for as much as 16GB RAM and 1TB storage.
Interestingly, Microsoft wants to pre-installed Windows 10 in S Mode on the new devices, and a free upgrade will be possible too, though this time not to the Pro version, but to Windows 10 Home.
Pricing is expected to be the same as for the current generation, though by upgrading the base models, it means customers would get better value for the money.
