Three different configurations could go live

Microsoft will announce Surface upgrades and new models at a hardware event on October 2, and one of the most anticipated moments is the debut of the third-generation Surface Laptop.

The software giant is expected to launch a 15-inch version of the Surface Laptop, and according to a new report, the device could be powered by an AMD processor.

This isn’t the first time we hear about Microsoft replacing Intel with AMD in the Surface lineup, and German site WinFuture writes there’s a chance three different configurations would be launched.

For now, however, very little is known about the chips that Microsoft wants to use on the Surface Laptop 3, but there’s a chance the company goes for AMD Ryzen 5 3550H or Ryzen 7 3750H to match the performance users would expect from an Intel model.

Big win for AMD

Microsoft is pushing hard for the Surface Laptop to become one of the leading products of its Surface lineup, and the addition of a 15-inch model would help this device go after a wider range of potential customers.

At this point, the Surface Book 2 is the only Surface version coming with a 15-inch variant.

But at the same time, switching to AMD for the Surface lineup is an important achievement for AMD as well, especially because Microsoft’s devices have been serving as pioneers of new features and form factors since their debut in 2012. AMD could thus join the party as well, and by working with Microsoft, which remains the world’s number one software company, it can further expand in this side of the market.

Full details about the next Surface generation will be announced by Microsoft on October 2, but for the time being, all signs seem to be pointing towards a 15-inch Surface Laptop with an AMD chip launching alongside Surface Pro 7 and upgrades for the Surface Go.
