Microsoft has released a new firmware update for the Surface Duo 2, and the new version includes not only additional fixes and further refinements but also a batch of new features.

First and foremost, the new firmware update, which can be downloaded right now on the Surface Duo 2, includes all security improvements that were included by Google in the December 2021 Android Security Bulleting.

This obviously makes perfect sense, so after installing this update, the Surface Duo 2 aligns with the rest of the Android devices on the market in terms of security patches.

The update also improves app navigation with more polished animations, camera usability, the touch responsiveness, and the support for LDAC-enabled Bluetooth devices.

New features in this firmware update

At the same time, Microsoft says the firmware update includes an option to automatically launch OneNote when clicking the top button on the Surface Slim Pen. This behavior makes perfect sense, especially because OneNote is the recommended app to take notes with the Surface Slim Pen.

Keep in mind that the Surface Slim Pen must be paired with the Surface Duo 2 before this feature can be enabled – obviously, after installing the December 2021 firmware update.

Microsoft has also added new options for answering phone calls when the device is folded, as well as new settings to choose the default screen when folded.

Overall, this firmware update is one of the biggest releases since the launch of the Surface Duo 2, and it certainly polishes the experience of a device that’s supposed to spearhead sales of the dual-screen form factor in the Android device market. The new update is available right now on the Surface Duo 2, and given the included security improvements, you should install it as soon as possible to make sure all the bugs are patched.
