Microsoft has shared more information about its scheduled Surface update lifecycle, revealing that the Surface Go 2, the Surface Book 3, Surface Pro X SQ2, and Surface Laptop Go would be supported until 2024.

The full dates are available in the table embedded at the end of the article.

The Surface Laptop Go and Surface Pro X SQ2 (the revised version that was announced earlier this year) are the ones getting the longest period of support right now, as they are supposed to reach the end of servicing on October 13, 2014.

Surface Book 3 will continue to receive updates until May 26, 2024.

Firmware and driver updates

Microsoft explains that the Surface driver and firmware lifecycle is divided into two parts, namely device support period and OS version support, with the latter concerning the date when the Windows 10 versions that the Surface devices run are supposed to be retired.

In other words, if your Surface runs a version of Windows 10 that no longer receives updates, this means you need to update to a newer release of the operating system to get more patches.

Furthermore, Microsoft clearly states that Surface computers won’t receive updates for a Windows 10 version older than the one it ships with.

As far as the driver support is concerned, Microsoft guarantees at least 4 years of updates.

“The device support period defines the period during which Surface will support driver and firmware updates for a device. The Device Support Period starts when a device is released. Surface devices will receive driver and firmware updates for at least 4 years from when the device was first released. In cases where the support duration is longer than 4 years, an updated end of servicing date will be published in advance of the date of last servicing,” Microsoft explains.

New Surface models are projected to launch next year, including the Surface Pro 8.
